Sometimes it’s a good thing a woman can’t keep a secret, especially when it involves a finding a great deal. Women will triumphantly exclaim “I bought this great top for $10 at Kmart” or “go to Myer there’s a huge sale”.
1. The right time and place
The best time for sales is with the change of the season. To find out when selected retailers have a clearance, sign up to loyalty cards. You will be informed of sales promptly and this increases your chances of getting discounted items in your size. Scour the racks of secondhand stores, vintage boutiques and outlets like DFO as these are fun places to find bargains.
2. Mix and match
To look like you’ve spent more on your outfit, mix cheaper pieces with expensive ones. For instance no one would guess you are wearing a pair of Target jeans with a silk blouse and diamond earrings. To give greater interest to a plain top, add a designer necklace.
To keep your look up-to-date, set aside a monthly wardrobe budget that could be as little as $20. This will allow you to add a new pair of earrings or a new belt to refresh a few outfits. Places such as Crossroads, Ice Design and Kmart have low cost prices.
4. Shop your wardrobe
It’s surprising how many outfits you can create with clothes you forgot were hiding in your wardrobe. For example if you’ve always paired a black tee with a black and white skirt, try wearing the same skirt with a coloured top like red.
5. Talk to a tailor
Do you have items that you love but need repairing? Whether it’s a broken zip or busted seam, having these fixed can save you money by not having to purchase a new one. Restyle existing items, you may be able to turn an evening gown into a cocktail dress.
6. Switch it up
One woman’s trash is another one’s treasure, they say. Organise a clothes swap with your friends. Get a group of girls to detox their wardrobes and bring along their unwanted items to exchange over coffee (or if you’re like me a glass of wine).
7. Check out the web
You can find clothing bargains online at places like www.theiconic.com.au, www.boohoo.com, www.asos.com.au and www.allyfashion.com. Stores such as Bardot, Myer, Target and Forever New offer free shipping for purchases over a certain amount and you can exchange in store.
Remember what mother use to say “Nothing’s cheap unless you need it”.
Buying clothes that just sit in your wardrobe with the tag attached is a waste of money. Only purchase clothes and accessories that suit you and your lifestyle.
