The Perfect Summer Shorts - Part 1

How I stopped loathing and started loving shorts

Shorts were one of the many things that I never liked to wear. I used to worry about being too pale, too big and too short. If let my inner mean girl win, I would never have worn a pair of shorts. I learned to hush the negative voices and instead focus on the positives. This has allowed me to wear shorts with confidence and style.

If you’ve ever felt too pale, too big or too short here’s how I overcame these objections to wearing shorts:
Too pale
If you feel you have ghostly white legs, you can counteract the contrast of the shorts by wearing a lighter colour. For example, wearing dark shorts will make your legs lighter, as it contrasts more with your skin tone. Instead, choose a pastel colour such as blush or light denim as this will make the shade between your skin and the shorts appear similar.

Over the years I’ve grown to accept my paleness and now love and protect my fair skin. I don’t worry about wearing darker shades as they are a great for mixing and matching. For example, I now wear navy without worry.
Too big
If you have a fuller upper thigh, instead of wearing baggy shorts to hide, try wearing fitted styles with stretchy fabric. This will hug your hip giving you a slimmer silhouette. Choosing deeper tones such as dark denim or black will also help to camouflage bigger hips.

Sometimes we focus on the parts we don’t like. If for you it’s your butt, hips or thighs, try to look at the whole picture. Wear a bright coloured or printed top that shifts the eye from the hips and up towards your eyes.

Too short
The worst thing a shorty can do is wear a long pair of shorts. This only succeeds in making the wearer look even shorter. To give the appearance of more height you can do 3 things:

  1. Go short: look for above knee styles. Mid lengths are perfect to extend the visual length of your legs.
  2. Tuck in your tops: a simple tuck or knot in your top. This will assist in making your torso look shorter and therefore your legs longer. High waisted shorts are also great at making your legs look lengthier.
  3. Add height: Nothing adds height easier than a pair of heels. My favourite style with shorts is a wedge.
Your legs are amazing, they work hard to support you all day. They take you to great places, so love your legs no matter the shape, size or skin tone. It’s time to show those off x
